TOBIAS, Lt.-Cmdr. James J., RCNVR, RCN CAF, CD Ret'd - Passed away suddenly at home in Bridgewater on March 17, 2006. Born in Saint John, N.B., he was a son of the late Solomon and Jean (Corey) Tobias. He served in the RCNVR during the Second World War, on convoy duties, minesweeping during D-Day. He was engaged in the Liberation of Cherbourg, France, Channel Islands and Bordeaux. He was demobilized in 1945, re-engaged in RCN in 1948, commissioned from the ranks in 1960. He served in Buckingham, New Waterford, and was Weapons Officer on Cayuga. He was Physical Education and Recreation Officer at Cornwallis, N.S.; Esquimalt, B.C.; and Greenwood, N.S. He served as Commanding Officer of HMCS Acadia, a National Sea Cadet Camp at HMCS Cornwallis for a number of years, retiring in 1980. In civilian life he was a motel manager, clothing store manager and real estate agent. He was also a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 24, Conquerall Bank Fire Hall, N.S. Naval Officer's Association and Atlantic C & PO's Association, and a volunteer driver for Senior Wheels in Bridgewater. During his retirement he enjoyed boating on his boat, Jambar, oil painting of which family heirlooms are many, travel, darts, bowling, golfing, time spent on the computer, and time spent with family. He was predeceased by brothers, Fred, Louis, Francis, David; sister, Vicky. Surviving are his companion, Barbara Proux, Bridgewater; sons, Jamiel, Calgary, Alta.; David, Victoria, B.C.; daughters, Catherine, Homestead, Fla., and Elizabeth (Slauenwhite), Halifax; granddaughter, Lindsay, and grandson, Jamiel. Cremation has taken place. Interment in Saint John, N.B. A memorial service will be held in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater, today at 7 p.m. Donations to Senior Wheels, Bridgewater.
